Update: We received an unprecedented number of Tier 1 requests in August before applications closed. They are being reviewed as quickly as possible. We expect to let applicants know in November whether their projects were approved for funding from the Foundation.

Dear colleagues,

Over the last year, Rasmuson Foundation has undergone a tremendous amount of change. From the passing of our beloved Chairman Ed Rasmuson in early 2022 to the retirement of our founding CEO, we are experiencing a once-in-a-generation transition in leadership. These changes bring an opportunity to reflect on where we have been and to set the course for where we want to go.  With that in mind, we are announcing a pause in grantmaking.

Our 2023-24 grantmaking will be adjusted in the following ways:

  • Tier 1 (grants up to $25,000): Applications will be accepted until Aug. 31, 2023, and reviewed and decided on by October 2023. After that cutoff time, no new Tier 1 applications will be accepted until mid-2024.
  • Tier 2 and program-related investments (grants and investments above $25,000): From now until mid-2024, Tier 2 and PRI proposals that already have been received will be considered and decided on by December 2023. No new proposals will be accepted until mid-2024.
  • Individual Artist Awards: The timing of the next cycle of the Individual Artist Awards will be announced in mid-2024. The IAA program will not open for applications this winter.
  • Sabbatical Awards: Applications for 2024 sabbaticals will be accepted through Aug. 3, 2023, and reviewed and decided on by November 2023. The timing of the next sabbatical cycle will be announced in mid-2024.

This announcement does not impact any of our previously approved grant commitments, which will be paid out as planned.

During this time, we will be improving our systems, updating our application process, and creating a strategic plan with our board. This internal work will allow us to serve Alaska grantees with the care and intention we want and you deserve.

Your work, service and commitment to Alaska is why we exist, and we have worked together to make Alaska the place we are proud to call home. We understand that our new timing may impact your plans. Know that we are taking these steps to ensure we are well-positioned long into the future to support our incredible mission work throughout Alaska. Foundation staff and the board are committed to ensuring that every investment we make deeply matters to the well-being of Alaskans. We look forward to hearing more about your projects and ideas well into the future.

If you have questions about a grant in process or future grants, please feel free to set up a time to talk to a member of our Program Team through our bookings calendar. Or you can email us at info@rasmuson.org or call 907-297-2700. We will announce the timing for reopening all grant applications on our website and by email. Thank you for your patience and for all you do for Alaska.

Warmly,

Gretchen Guess
