Hello friends,
As National Philanthropy Day approaches, I have been thinking about what it means to show up for each other, especially in challenging times. Alaskans know the power of community. In a state as vast and rugged as ours, we depend on one another. When we see a need, we ask, “How can we help?” And together, we find a way forward.
This month, we’re sharing stories that reflect that spirit through the second season of our Passion to Purpose video series. Each story highlights local leaders and organizations working side by side to create solutions that matter.
Here’s a look at the stories we’re sharing:
A refugee-run farming co-op that empowers Anchorage’s refugee communities by providing English language and small business skills, a sense of community for newcomers, access to fresh vegetables, and opportunities to earn income. Made possible by Catholic Social Services, this project fosters a collaborative environment where everyone is valued and has a role to play.
Remote but mighty, Bethel is known for its strong sense of community and resilience. Local organizations like Tundra Women’s Coalition, Bethel Community Services Foundation, Bethel Food Bank and Pantry, Bethel Winter House – Uksumi Uitavik, and Bethel Friends of Canines work together to address food insecurity, homelessness, and animal rescue.
Born from a grassroots effort, Skeetawk provides affordable access to winter sports for Alaskans. The nonprofit’s mission is to promote healthy lifestyles and outdoor recreation, rooted in the Dena’ina word Shk’ituk’t – “place where we slide down.”
When funding was scarce, creativity stepped in. In Our Backyard partnered with the local Lions Club and other community partners to establish six interim housing shelters for Anchorage’s unhoused seniors, a model of collaboration and care.
Philanthropy Day is Nov. 14. Let’s celebrate the impact of working together. Watch the new videos below, share them, and take a moment to thank someone who makes a difference in your community. Together, we keep Alaska strong.
Thank you for all you do,
