Dear Alaskans,

Art may be different for each of us, but it is central to how we live, learn, and grow. From schools to small businesses to community spaces, local art is everywhere. We’re fortunate to share our state with artists representing cultures across the world, echoing traditional practices and innovating for the future. I know that for me, the breadth of Alaska’s artistic community offers joy and celebration of our diversity.

In April, we opened the applications for the 2025 Individual Artist Awards (IAA), one of the direct and impactful ways we invest in Alaska. These awards are designed to give artists time, space, and resources to advance their practice, and this year, we’re expanding our reach.

As part of a program redesign, we’ve introduced a new structure. Project Awards, for focused, one-year creative efforts, will be offered in odd-numbered years. Fellowship Awards, for deeper, long-term development, will be offered in even-numbered years, beginning in 2026. This alternating schedule enables us to increase access for artists working across career stages.

We will award up to 50 Project Awards of $10,000 each, doubling the quantity from our most recent cycle in 2023. This expansion reflects the growing demand from artists across Alaska. Each year, hundreds of artists submit thoughtful, compelling proposals. Doubling the number of awards allows us to help more of them say yes to their next project. The application deadline for 2025 Project Awards is June 9. Project Awards are for artists at any career stage.

Next year, IAA will feature Fellowship Awards, with the program alternating between Fellowships and Project Awards each year. Fellowships are $25,000 competitive grants for mid-to-late career artists, providing flexible funds to advance their creative practice. Both the Project and Fellowship awards are selected by national juried panel.

And later this year, we will announce the recipient of the 2025 Distinguished Artist Award. In March, Alaskans from around the state were invited to nominate an artist who chose to make their lives and careers in Alaska and who has demonstrated creative excellence and significant artistic accomplishments. The $50,000 award will go to a nominated artist selected by an Alaskan juried panel.

Since 2003, the Individual Artist Awards program has invested over $6.5 million in Alaska’s artists.  IAA is a core program—what we do each and every year. It is critical we celebrate our culture and diversity through artistic expression.

We look forward to hearing from you as we strengthen Alaska through the creativity of those who call it home.

Thank you for all you do,
