Tasha Pineda, our chief program officer, and I join a group walk to view the new signage at Goose Lake Park in Anchorage.
What a winter! Southcentral has had record-breaking ice, wind, and snow. Southeast has had unprecedented snow, avalanche hazards, and flooding. The Interior, North, and Western regions have redefined subzero temperatures. Through it all, Alaskans do what makes us Alaskans: We help our neighbors shovel their stairs or tow them out of snow berms, and when the weather eases, we strap on our skis or snowshoes and make the most of winter.
Through it all, I have been thinking of the unsung heroes of our local and state governments, Tribal governments, and utility workers. From clearing roads, to restoring power and lights, to — my personal favorite, here in Anchorage — plowing and hot-mopping our lakes each morning so skaters can enjoy the outdoors, these are the Alaskans who keep our communities running, no matter what the weather brings.
From the driver’s seat of a snowplow, the bucket of a utility truck, or the dispatch office of first responders, these Alaskans see their communities up close. Bus drivers, public works crews, legislators, and tribal leaders all gain an intimate understanding of the people and places they serve.
This firsthand knowledge is one of the key reasons Rasmuson Foundation partners with local governments across the state, including cities and tribes. Those who work within a community are often the first to see emerging needs and the first to imagine solutions. Who better to envision a safer playground, a new community center, or an accessible trail system than the individuals responsible for caring for the places we call home?
These partnerships fuel our mission to invest, connect, and convene, empowering Alaskans to help each other. While our Community Support, Legacy, Tier 1, and other grant programs each serve unique purposes, they share a common foundation: trust in Alaska’s people to understand Alaska’s needs.
Your priorities, not ours, guide our work. It is our privilege to support Alaskans who are responding to the challenges they see and strengthening the communities they love.
As we step into 2026, we remain committed to a shared vision: an Alaska where people, culture, and communities are thriving. We are honored to walk alongside you in this work.
Thank you for all you do,
