Dear Colleagues,

Ushering in the new year is an exciting time for Rasmuson Foundation. We start 2024 as we do every year: with a commitment to our grantees, partners, and communities. As our Founder Elmer said, “Helping others is an Alaskan tradition.”

2023 was an incredible year for our grantmaking, with more than $35 million invested in Alaska, seven hard-working Alaskan nonprofit leaders receiving a Sabbatical Award, and 36 artists receiving an Individual Artist Award. We are so blessed by each of you and what you do for Alaska.

2023 was also an incredible year for me as I took over the reins from our first CEO, Diane Kaplan. It was a year of learning and reconnecting. My parents came to Alaska at statehood, I grew up in and served Alaska, and I am so glad to be back home. My thanks to the over 100 of you for the great conversations – and a shout out to the communities that held conversations: Ketchikan, Sitka, Juneau, Mat-Su, Fairbanks, Kotzebue, Golovin, Nome, Bethel, and Napakiak. In 2024, I commit to continuing to be out in my beloved state and always accessible.

We are pausing some of our grantmaking, specifically our Tier 1, Tier 2, and Individual Artist grants, until later in 2024. During this time, we will be connecting with many of you, evaluating what works and what needs to be improved along with strengthening and simplifying our internal processes.

While we are pausing, our doors remain open.

If you have projects on the horizon, we hope you will connect with us and start those funding conversations. Here’s the best way to get hold of us.

Our commitment and work in the homeless space is not pausing. Our Vice President of Strategy, Tasha Pineda, our Program Officer, Deborah Vo, and I are continuing our work with partners statewide on this critical issue.

As we move through 2024, we will keep you updated, including any important dates, announcements, and when we are out in your community. If you are in Anchorage, feel free to stop by our offices to say hello at: 301 W. Northern Lights, Blvd, Suite 601, Anchorage, AK, 99503.

Thank you for all you do.

Gratefully,

Gretchen Guess
