Recently, I shared how mission connects me to the work we do at Rasmuson Foundation. That connection deepens when we spend time with the people and organizations we support—not just through grantmaking, but by showing up in person. You can learn at one level about a project by reading a report, but at a totally different level when you see it, hear it, feel it, smell it.
It’s one thing to fund a project. That work is crucial, and we’re proud to do it. But when we visit our partners, walk alongside them, and hear their stories firsthand, we gain something just as valuable: understanding.
Last week, Foundation board members, staff, and Rasmuson family members spent time visiting with community partners across Anchorage. From food access and healthcare to trail systems and wildlife rehabilitation, we saw the impact of their work up close—and the dedication behind it.
At Fresh International Gardens, we joined the morning welcome circle with refugee and immigrant farmers—some newly arrived in Alaska, others who’ve called it home for years. As we introduced ourselves, we saw how this space nurtures connection, language learning, and belonging. A group of young Rasmuson family members jumped in to help move wood chips while the rest of us toured the farm.
At the Alaska Zoo, we had the chance to feed moose and bears and learn more about their work rehabilitating animals and educating the public about Alaska’s wildlife. With Alaska Trails, we heard about the ambitious vision for the Alaska Long Trail and the partnerships making it possible. And at Anchorage Neighborhood Health Center, we saw how they’re continuing in their sixth decade since starting as a small clinic to expand care to meet the growing and changing needs in our community—work that’s critical to keeping Alaskans healthy.
Just showing up is invaluable. In listening. In asking questions. These visits reminded us that every dollar we grant, every system we help strengthen, is meant to serve Alaskans. And when we take the time to experience the work firsthand, we can connect with our partners in a way that is not otherwise possible.
