Susie Silook is a Yupik/Inupiaq writer, carver and sculptor currently living in Anchorage, Alaska. The ancestral ivory dolls of St. Lawrence Island, traditionally carved by men, are the basis of her work. While she works in the traditional media of ivory and whalebone, her themes are the contemporary issues confronting Alaska Natives, particularly women, with a specific focus on violence against Native women. Silook also departs from tradition by depicting women in her carvings rather than the animals most commonly rendered by men. Her sculpture is featured in the Anchorage Museum, the Alaska Shop on Madison in New York City, and in many private and corporate collections in Alaska, New York and San Francisco.
