July 1 marked the beginning of the new fiscal year for the State of Alaska, which means the rubber just hit the road for a process that began in December 2011 with the introduction of the Governor’s operating, capital, and mental health budget proposals, continued through the legislative session this spring as lawmakers made their mark on the bills, and culminated in mid-May with the bills’ signing.

Foundation Announces Grants, Loans

Anchorage – Rasmuson Foundation’s Board of Directors conducted its biannual meeting yesterday and approved $9.6 million in funding for nonprofit projects across Alaska. With these awards, Rasmuson Foundation surpassed $200 million in total grantmaking, which it began in 1955 with a $125 grant to Wasilla Presbyterian Church for a motion picture projector.

Anchorage –  In the first quarter of 2012, Rasmuson Foundation made 29 awards totaling $915,215 to Alaska nonprofits, including three sabbatical awards previously announced. A complete list of awards can be found at the end of this release.

Nonprofits provide sanctuary, shelter from the storm

Funds from Pick. Click. Give. are particularly crucial to organizations that provide help in emergency situations because they are “unrestricted.” Unlike grants that pay for specific programs or initiatives, unrestricted funds can be used for whatever a nonprofit needs, like transportation, sundries or a phone card for women and children unexpectedly uprooted from their homes. AWARE and American Red Cross of Alaska are two nonprofits that are working to improve outcomes for Alaskans in crisis. Read more in this week's post.
