Foundation Awards $13.5 Million

Anchorage, Alaska –  The Rasmuson Foundation Board of Directors announces that $13.5 million has been awarded to Alaska nonprofits in grants and initiatives to improve the quality of life in the state. The largest award announced was for Southcentral Foundation, which will receive $3 million for the start-up of the Nuka Institute.

July 1 marked the beginning of the new fiscal year for the State of Alaska, which means the rubber just hit the road for a process that began in December 2011 with the introduction of the Governor’s operating, capital, and mental health budget proposals, continued through the legislative session this spring as lawmakers made their mark on the bills, and culminated in mid-May with the bills’ signing.

Anchorage – Rasmuson Foundation’s Board of Directors conducted its biannual meeting yesterday and approved $9.6 million in funding for nonprofit projects across Alaska. With these awards, Rasmuson Foundation surpassed $200 million in total grantmaking, which it began in 1955 with a $125 grant to Wasilla Presbyterian Church for a motion picture projector.

Kodiak and its tradition of leadership

It was Memorial Day and we had made one attempt to land in Kodiak. After circling a good while, I thought I’d be back in sunny Anchorage in 40 minutes or so. But a hole opened in the clouds and soon I was in Andy Teube’s passenger van riding over to Near Island across from Kodiak’s downtown.
