On the death of Terry Adkins

Rasmuson Foundation is saddened by the news that friend and widely-acclaimed artist and musician Terry Adkins died of heart failure Friday at the age of 60. In this post, Diane Kaplan shares her 40-year history with Terry, which includes the development of a major exhibition about his time in Alaska.

Can she do it? Can we do it together? Alaska author Andromeda Romano-Lax is raising funds to research her next novel. We're all in for her new work that explores 1920s psychology, the rise of the parenting advice industry, and the controversial individuals who made history. Capturing Anchorage street scenes

Imagine yourself in one of Anchorage’s homeless camps. Cooking. Waking. Waiting. Whatever. What would life look like from that perspective? Different? The same? Interested in looking? Anthony Hernandez is. Those are just some of the shots that the California-based photographer has attempted to capture as he wandered through Anchorage during the past month.

The Democratization of Arts Philanthropy

Sometimes Alaskans feel removed and isolated from peers, organizations and collaborations operating on a national and global scale. However, there are numerous examples within Alaska where we lead on a global level. Does creativity give Alaska an edge? And can technology help us exploit it. This was the very topic of Rasmuson Foundation President Diane Kaplan's presentation at TEDxAnchorage.

John Haines: Alaskan Poet

John Haines, a Rasmuson Foundation Distinguished Artist Award recipient (2005) and United States Artist Rasmuson Fellow (2007), died yesterday in Fairbanks at the age of 86. 

In addition to serving as Alaska’s 3rd Poet Laureate from 1969 to 1973, Haines’ honors include the Alaska Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts, two Guggenheim Fellowships, an Amy Lowell Travelling Fellowship, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Library of Congress.

In this edition, United States Artists names new fellows; the Foundation spends a day in the Valley; and Boy Scouts are near completion on their Denali High Adventure Scout Base Camp.

From Barrow to Sundance

Ten years ago when visiting New York City, a colleague suggested we invite to dinner a NYU film student from Barrow. This month, that “starving student” will have his feature film, the first to be shot in Inupiaq, screened at Sundance. Rasmuson Foundation is matching donations this week to help get the two Barrow-based actors to one of the biggest film festivals on the planet.

Microphilanthropy and the arts

Tomorrow night in New York City’s Jazz at Lincoln Center, a gala event will take place where United States Artists (USA) will announce the recipients of their $50,000 fellowship awards. While the hubbub of tomorrow’s event will be celebrating the artists, USA is also officially announcing two innovations that stand to have tremendous impact on funding for new creative work undertaken by this country's artists.
