Bethel was a great place to be a kid in the 1950s and 1960s. No, we weren’t signed up for ballet or piano lessons or chauffeured to soccer. But we were free to wander through willows looking for robins’ nests. Free to ramble over the tundra picking berries.
Interior elder facility opening
In rural Alaska, many elders who are no longer able to live independently are left with no choice, but to leave their home for larger communities. In the Interior, with the opening of the Yukon-Koyukuk Elder Assisted Living Facility, elders will now be able to stay in the region they feel most at home, along the Yukon River. The 14th annual Educational Tour of Alaska for Grantmakers kicked off today with a 7 a.m. departure from Seattle, Washington. First stop: Bethel, Alaska. Each year, the Foundation invites a small group of grantmakers from the South 48 to visit Alaska.
Tundra Women’s Coalition helps those most in need
While we have been trumpeting with pride about the incredible accomplishment that is the new Tundra Women’s Coalition (TWC) Domestic Violence Crisis Center and Shelter in Bethel, it is not without the recognition that the need for a newer, better facility is a sad commentary about Alaska.
