Program Officer Roy Agloinga

Anchorage, AK — A staff member at Rasmuson Foundation has been picked for an intensive leadership program designed to develop diverse talent in philanthropic organizations.

Roy Agloinga, a Foundation program officer since 2015, has been selected to participate in the yearlong Council on Foundations 2018 Career Pathways program. Participants graduate with the knowledge, experience and professional networks needed to be more effective in their current roles and more deliberate in their contributions to the field of philanthropy. The goal is to position talented professionals to compete successfully for senior-level foundation positions.

Agloinga grew up in White Mountain, near Nome on the Bering Sea Coast, in a traditional subsistence family, which to this day relies on a wide range of traditional foods from the land and sea including seal, moose and salmon.

At Rasmuson Foundation, Agloinga has been on “a fast track,” as he learns the complexities of philanthropy, Diane Kaplan, Rasmuson Foundation president and CEO, said in nominating him. He works with art organizations, tribal organizations, dental health aide programs, nonprofit leaders and others, including minority groups that haven’t always sought help from Alaska’s largest foundation.

He brings a varied background of leadership in Alaska: former chief operating officer and interim president of Norton Sound Health Corp., mayor of White Mountain, rural affairs coordinator for then-Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich, and tribal affairs director for Kawerak Inc. serving 18 tribes in the Nome area.

“Roy has a unique perspective and has worked hard to navigate the dynamic Alaskan landscapes of culture, race, economy, sovereignty, and philanthropy in a state which prides itself both as a traditionally indigenous and a frontier home,” Kaplan said.

Agloinga said he intends to build new relationships and learn more about the power and potential of philanthropy.

“I want to strengthen my contribution in the field,” he said. His rural background shapes his work philosophy and materializes in everyday life, he said. “I am connected to a culture and set of values that has never steered me wrong.”

Career Pathways equips mid-career professionals at grantmaking organizations and other nonprofit institutions to lead high-performing organizations and programs in the U.S. and around the world. Since launching in 2010, 81 percent of Career Pathways alumni are working at the senior executive level in philanthropic organizations across the world.

Over the course of a year, Agloinga will work on major issues facing philanthropic leaders. He will gain unprecedented access to a vast network of CEOs, trustees, search firm executives, and national thought leaders, and he will attend virtual and in-person career trainings across the country. Each Pathways member also will be paired with an executive coach to guide them on their path to excellence.

“Career Pathways is a leadership incubator and reflects the Council’s steadfast commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in and beyond the field of philanthropy,” said Vikki Spruill, President and CEO of the Council on Foundations. “Our 2018 cohort class raises the bar on talent, drive, and vision—and we are eager to begin engaging with our cohort and for them to be able to apply their new knowledge at their home institutions and in their communities.”
