Arlene Skinner
Weaver Arlene Skinner harvests her own materials, using the wild beach rye grass of Kodiak Island, where she lives and works. Throughout her work, Skinner uses stones, beads, cordage and silk floss to complement the natural colors of the cured grass. “The feelings expressed in my art are inspired by the sights and sounds of nature around me; the wind, the waves and patches of deep green grass,” she said. Her work is held in the permanent collections at the Anchorage Museum, the Alutiiq Museum and Repository, the Baranov Museum and the Alaska Native Medical Center. Skinner has also served as an instructor at Kodiak College, and shown her work at exhibitions around the state.
