Kathleen Carlo-Kendall is a contemporary Athabaskan mask maker. She grew up in Fairbanks and started making her artwork at the Native Arts Center at the University of Alaska Fairbanks with teacher Ron Senungetuk. Carlo-Kendall received a BFA in Metalsmithing from UAF, but considers herself a woodworker as well. She enjoys using the two media together to form an interesting contrast. Carlo-Kendall’s modern artwork sometimes symbolizes an event or spirit. Other times, she says, it is just what comes out of the shape of the wood.
